£25,000 for Perranuthnoe Improvements!

Villagers in Perranuthnoe are celebrating an injection of £25,000 to fund a major revamp for their Church Room, creating a home for a wide variety of community groups. A public meeting is being held in the parish church at 7.15pm on Friday, April the 30th to showcase the planned improvements and residents are invited to share their ideas for the new activities which could take place in the building.

The £25,000 will pay for improvements to disabled access, a hearing loop, damp-proofing and a redesign of the kitchen area and numerous small details which will make a big difference especially to the very young, the elderly and the disabled members of the community.

Coby Llewellyn, Church Treasurer explains, “We are fortunate to have a very active community in Perranuthnoe. It’s a relatively small space, but this funding, coupled with some very creative ideas put forward by local people, means that we can turn the Church Room into a comfortable, flexible space; a real focal point for village life.”

The villagers raised the first £2,700 through its popular Open Gardens event, volunteers then applied to the Church and Community Fund who granted £5,000 and to the Big Lottery Fund who granted the maximum £10,000. Villagers were delighted with these grant awards and the final piece of the jigsaw was found from Church reserves and generous private donations.

Volunteer, Katie Kirk, said “These projects only work if everyone brings a little something to the table – be it knowledge, time, ideas, energy or finance. Last year villagers turned out to a really useful consultation event and gave us their ideas for improvements to the fabric of the building. Now the building plans are finalised we are inviting people to share their ideas once again, looking towards the new activities that could take place once the build-work has been completed.”

Michael Ball, Church Warden said “We have had tremendous support from so many people in the village and we would like to thank all those who open their gardens to the public each summer, the people who make and serve all the refreshments, the washer-uppers, the stall holders and raffle-sellers, the people who’ve designed the project as well as those individuals who’ve quietly given financial donations.”

The presentation on Friday 30th will be short with plenty of time afterwards for people to view the plans and actively share their ideas over a cup of tea.

Cabin Planning - Third application

A new proposal has been submitted for the cabin. The last one has been withdrawn. The Parish Council, for some reason, has not been sent copies of the application even though it was registered on 23rd March. However, I popped down to St Clare this morning and the receptionist very kindly made copies for me. These are available for viewing at Churchtown House. I welcome anyone to come and take a look. The plans differ from the last in that there is now a staff toilet included. In addition foul drainage is now connected to the mains via a new pumping arrangement on the Cliff House development and the new Cornish hedge is now approximately 1.25 metres high on the roadside (90cm on cabin side). Other than that, on a very swift perusal, the plans appear to remain the same as the second incarnation. Opening hours 8am - 8pm.

As always, letters of support or objection should be addressed to planning at St Clare with, ideally, a copy to me. The Parish Council is trying to arrange a special meeting to discuss this as the consultation period is 8th - 29th April. This period falls directly between the monthly meetings so unless a special meeting can be arranged Parish views cannot be expressed.

I notice that on another thread there are a number of anonymous views, both in support of and objecting to this proposal. Can I urge those people to express their views in writing? If you feel strongly enough to express yourself on the website, isn't it worth exercising your democratic rights by making your views known to the Parish Council?

Google Maps - Street View

Google has extended its Street view service. It now covers 95% of homes in the UK, Perranuthnoe included!

Google Street View is a technology featured in Google Maps and Google Earth that provides 360° horizontal and 290° vertical panoramic views from a row of positions along the street (one every approximately 10 or 20 metres) for many streets in the world, from a height of about 2.5 metres. It was launched on May 25, 2007, and has gradually expanded.

From today 360° pictures are available of most areas of the village. Although it's fun to play with is it an invasion of privacy?

Visa & MasterCard Telephone Credit Card Scam

An Email has been circulating with a warning that scammers are attempting to obtain CVV2/CVC2 security numbers by phoning credit card holders and posing as Security and Fraud Department staff from Visa or MasterCard.

CVV2/CVC2 security numbers are the three-digit security codes included on the back of credit/debit cards.

We all receive scam warnings most of which are just scare mongering and a nuisance. Athough the specific CVV2/CVC2 scam described may not occur as often as implied, the advice in the message is nevertheless worth heeding.

For your own security you should never provide account information to anyone claiming to be from a credit card provider, the financial institution that issued the card or any other company, without first effectively verifying the identity of the caller. Credit card companies or banks are unlikely to request sensitive financial information over the phone unless you were the one who initiated the call.

If you do receive such an unsolicited call, the safest course of action is to:

1. Ask for the caller's name and department details and then terminate the call.
2. Find a legitimate contact number for the company either in a bill or other official documentation or a telephone directory. (Don't use a contact number provided by the caller).
3. Call the company and ask to speak to the original caller by name.

This strategy should effectively derail any scam attempts and also allow you to deal with the issue in the event that the call was actually legitimate.

A key factor regarding this scheme is that it can only work if the scammer already has your credit card number and contact details. In other words, regardless of the success or failure of the scheme, your financial security has already been compromised. Thus, if you do receive a security code scam call like the one described, recognizing it as a scam and terminating the call is only part of the solution. Naturally, you should also immediately inform your credit card issuer that the security of your card may have been compromised and take any other steps necessary to protect yourself from credit card fraud and identity theft.

Beth has been missing since around 6.30am on Monday 22nd February. She is described as around 5ft 6ins tall, of slim build with shoulder length dark brown/black hair, aged 31 from Ashton near Helston.

She was in her green Volkswagen Golf (Registration N678 HCV) and is believed to be missing in the Helston/Falmouth area - although she could be elsewhere in the county/region by now.

Neighbourhood Watch Group

Residents of Perranuthnoe are looking to re-establish their own neighbourhood watch group with the aim of keeping the village as safe as it always has been.

Neighbourhood Watch is about looking out for each other, acting together as the eyes and ears of the neighbourhood and picking up on anything that could cause concern or worry.

Similarly, the police have a role in sharing information about recent crimes in the neighbourhood so that members can stay vigilant, and have the opportunity to take appropriate precautions to avoid becoming victims themselves.

Val is starting a 'drop in' knitting group in the shop on Wednesday afternoons 2pm to 4.30pm.

Chris Boulton a knitter with many years experience will be there to offer advice to those who want it, but most of all its a social group for people to pass on their experiences, tips or just chat whilst knitting.

HAITI - ShelterBox Appeal
