Update on Superfast Cornwall - But Superslow Perranuthnoe?

Dear All,

We think - and hope- that there is good news for everyone who has posted on this site or has emailed us regarding 'Perranuthnoe superslow fibre broadband'.

On 21 October there were 2 BT Openreach vans in the village, with manhole covers being lifted. We spoke to the engineers, who were from the 'copper team' in St Austell and were very helpful. They had a 'job card' to investigate the copper/aluminium cable story and to replace any aluminium cable between Perran Cross and the cabinet opposite the pub. There is apparently a recent 100-pair copper cable (installed in 2013?), which connects most people in the village, and the engineers were uncertain about the extent of aluminium cable (the manholes had a lot of mud in them, with the aluminium cable possibly hidden). In addition, the cabinet box near the pub is in a bad state.

The team was back yesterday, this time with an additional job card to replace the box, which will be done by a contractor as the first step. The cable replacement will require traffic management (lights?) for a couple of days, and this is being organised. They then hope to replace the aluminium cable.

With the necessary BT authorisations and the ST Austell 'copper team' on the case it looks like we should see the work done in November - let's keep our fingers crossed! We will keep an eye out and post any news on action.

Superfast Cornwall - But Superslow Perranuthnoe?

Superfast Cornwall received £53m from the European Regional Development Fund and, in partnership with Cornwall County Council and BT, fibre broadband has been rolling out in a 2011-2015 programme.  Perranuthnoe is lucky as we are now covered and counted among the premises served – the job is done.  Or is it?

We live and work from our Perranuthnoe home and have had serious problems with our ‘superfast’ fibre broadband since we installed it in 2012 (often 1-4mbps download and failing completely) and routine problems with our ‘crackly’ phone line.  After a year of engineers’ visits and reports, we have just been told that BT will do nothing. We think that there will be others in the village with a similar problem.  This message is to find out if this is the case and then to consider a community effort to solve the problem for us all. Alternatively, we are considering satellite broadband.

The Facts

The facts, from our 12 month records of notes and phone calls from Openreach engineers and our ISP (Zen Internet – terrific people), are that: from the fibre cabinet at Perran Cross on the main road (opposite the Dynasty restaurant) ‘there is 970m of aluminium cable to the cable box (Cab1/5) at the Victoria Arms – at Dynasty (ie Perran Cross) there is a full strength signal and at the pub the tester can hardly measure it; it is like 1940s cable and its absolute rubbish…. it needs to be upgraded”; “there are 2 cables that run to the scp, there is a 50pair copper cable and a 50 pair aluminium cable, if customers are on the aluminium, max sync speeds are 10 and 15mbps whereas the copper are almost full speeds… there are no spares or stops down there” (paraphrased, records kept).

In early July we had traffic lights along the road into the village. The Openreach contractors told us that they were locating the original (clay) conduits carrying the cables to the cabinet by the pub, building access manholes and installing new plastic pipe conduits (see photos), to allow new cable to be installed easily.  They thought that it might be to bring fibre cable into the village (the ultimate ‘superfast’!). Our ISP was told that we would be switched to a copper line in early September.  After a year of effort, our ISP has now been firmly told that “Openreach would not be looking to change out the aluminium as there is a cost implication and this would not be cost effective for 1 customer. There would have to be a number of customers affected before they would look at undertaking any work”.

Our summary (and we are amateurs not experts!) is that:
  • there are 2 cables from Perran Cross to the Victoria in new conduit, with new access manholes;
  • one (newish?) cable has 50 copper pairs providing many in the village with relatively fast and reliable broadband; there are no spare copper cables;
  • the second (old) cable has 50 aluminium pairs supplying others in the village; this cable cannot be used for reliable superfast broadband;
  • we need either to live with the aluminium cable or seek a collective solution;
  • with the new manholes and conduit, removing and installing new cables should be straightforward;
  • a 50pair copper cable could replace the 50pair aluminium cable; all premises in the village would then have good telephone connections and relatively fast and reliable broadband (or be reasonably ‘future proofed’, if they do not have broadband now); there may be a need for additional cable to cope with growth.
Now that the conduit is upgraded, could we even have fibre links from the Perran Cross to the Victoria? This would give us almost ‘city superfast broadband’ (we would still have the short pubpremises link), as even copper is regarded as bad for broadband speed (but much better than aluminium).  What are the technical and policy issues involved in achieving this serious ‘future-proofing’ for Perranuthnoe?

What Can You Do?

We would first be grateful to hear from anyone that has a similar problem with their phone (crackle) and/or broadband (unreliable/slow) and second if they or anyone else is interested in taking this issue forward. The key point is that we are now counted as “served” with fibre access to the village, and those of us with aluminium cable will not be adequately served in the foreseeable future if we do not take collective action.

Please email us at jane.grey23@gmail.com by October 31st, so that we can see what the numbers are.  If there is a quorum and interest, we could perhaps meet and consider a proposal for action.  Our preliminary thoughts would be to put a strong petition to all or some of: our MP (Derek Thomas), Cornwall County Council Chairman (John Wood), BT CEO (Gavin Patterson), and Openreach CEO (Joe Garner), possibly with radio/TV/print media coverage.

Marie Vellenoweth Photo Presentaion

Marie Vellenoweth was born in Perranuthnoe in 1913 She lived in the village all her life to reach the grand age of 100 years.  During that period she never married but always had a keen interest in the crafts from knitting and crochet to tatting and bead-work. Amongst these interests was photography which she pursued with a passion well into old age and embraced the era of digital photography as she did everything else.  I remember one time she bought (yet another) new camera, thinking she didn’t understand it I asked her how many pixels it had and she came straight back with the answer.

On her 99th birthday she was given an iPad and had broadband installed which she thoroughly enjoyed and enabled her to keep in touch with village life through the Perranuthnoe website and one of the last memories I have of her was surfing the site and watching the video of her opening the new village hall.

Tim Hudson, Marie's nephew

Marie Vellenoweth died on Friday 10th January 2014 peacefully in her sleep with her family around her.

Miss Marion Trevenen Vellenoweth - known as Marie - aged 100 years of Perranuthnoe.

Lifeguard For Perran Beach

Recently, we were visited by Phil Drew from the RNLI. He chatted about the need for a lifeguard on Perranuthnoe Beach. This is something that Lisa and I have often talked about- ever since we were at the Cabin and were often the first stop for victims of weaver fish and even once a broken hip! Lifeguards are not only there to perform water rescues, they deal with anything from basic first aid requirements to cardiac arrests, broken bones and lost children to mention but a few.

If anyone in the village feels that a lifeguard during the summer season would be a benefit, then please feel free to pop in and add your signature to the petition. We have a coupe of weeks to gather as many names as possible.

We hope to see you soon

Can Anyone Use These? They Are Free

I have just posted a couple of things on freecycle and I wondered whether there was anyone in the village who might be able to use them?

UPDATED: Needed Urgently

Thank you, I now have enough boxes.

Roz

Has anyone got any boxes, for packing stuff up, books, china, glass etc., they need to be strong, reasonably large, if they have a lid or flaps that close and can keep the stuff in that's good but not essential, cardboard or wood is fine.  Of course I'll collect.

Tel: 01736 711761

Thanks very much

UPDATED: Buoy Theft - Can You Help?

I am so ridiculously happy to announce that my buoy has been returned!!! Thank you everyone for all your help and support over the past few days, this would not have been possible without each and everyone of you!
Much love to you all! - Chelsea

My art project has been stolen from outside my house today! It was a painting of a fisherman on a buoy and was hung outside The Old Chapel. It was there as it had to be 'weathered' for the project. I cannot believe anyone would do this but alas, they have.

If anyone has any information at all please contact me as soon as possible. I am supposed to hand it in for my exam!

Free Computer Classes For Older People

Being more mature in age can mean that you may have missed out on learning about new technology that younger people take for granted these days – but that doesn’t mean that you have to stay that way!

Jennis (Peppercorn) son Giles has started a small project. He is offering free computer classes to the more mature amongst us who would love to be able to use a computer to email and Skype family etc. but haven't a clue how to begin.

Giles isn't by any means a computer buff, he's a shipwright - but bought his grandmother (who's 81) a tablet for Christmas and embarked on teaching her to use it. He then realised that she had a couple of friends who also wanted to be able to contact family and friends overseas, send and receive photos, and generally join in with the rest of the world. Consequently he decided - a few weeks ago- to start this club. There is no charge, there is coffee and tea available for a small donation and an opportunity to meet others and to have fun learning how to access all the wonderful things available to them via the internet.

For anyone interested in going along the classes are on Monday evenings from 6-00pm until 7-00 to 7-30 at Peppercorn.

There is no need for people to book, but it's useful to know how many will turn up so if newbies wanted to call Jenni at home - 01736 797672, or leave a message at Peppercorn - 01736 719584, preferably before the day of the class - that'd be helpful. Similarly for any questions.

Giles would also like to here from others who would be willing to volunteer an hour of their time occasionally to offer guidance (one to one is ideal), he also needs more tablets to use - so he's looking for donations of tablets or donations towards buying a few for folks to use before they decide whether or not to buy their own. I think they currently cost about £140 so it wouldn't take long to save up for a couple if we could get some donations.

Please feel free to contact either Jenni on the numbers above or Kay via the village website contact page.

Village Defibrillators

We have raised over £500 so far towards the possible purchase of a 2nd defibrillator for Perranuthnoe (the first defibrillator, supplied by the Parish Council was installed last week outside the Victoria Inn)  It has been suggested that it would be a good idea to site a 2nd device near the beach at The Cabin.  We need to form a committee/group to push the project on further and a volunteer to manage the project.  I am holding the funds at present, £143 raised at the Craft Fayre lunch, £280 from Anna and Stewart from quiz money and a further £110 from recent quizzes.

Anyone interested please send me an email or leave me a comment via the village website perranjubilee@hotmail.co.uk

Thanks Andrea (The Old Post Office)

Defibrillators & Training

As you may know, the Parish Council is installing 3 defibrillators in the Parish and one is planned for outside the Vic in our village.  (The others will be outside The Crown in Goldsithney and outside the Falmouth Packet).  The Parish Council will also fund training in how to use the defibrillator for up to 10 Perran residents or people working in our village.  If more people would like to be trained in how to use the defibrillator, the training course is available for a bargain price of £15 per person.  Please sign up, as this is a very valuable piece of equipment which can save lives.

If you would like to volunteer or pay for defibrillator training, please contact Theresa on 711516.

Meanwhile, the village is continuing to raise funds for a second defibrillator to be located near the beach.

If anyone receives an email from Roz Quillan Chandler stating that she has sent you a PDF file via DropBox DO NOT OPEN OR CLICK ON ANY LINKS. It would appear her email address has been hacked.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have changed my password and scanned my computer. Presumably I won't have to change my email address?  I'd much rather not.

Warning From Parish Council

The Parish Council has been made aware of a potential scam as follows:

Some people locally have received calls claiming to be from a company which is working alongside BT to stop nuisance/unwanted calls. They are offering to send you a device in the post that plugs into the back of your phone and identifies and stops unwanted calls. After that, you are asked to provide your credit card details.

BT denies all knowledge of such a company or device, so please do not give out your address details or pass on your credit card details.

Wheal Charlotte 1861

Can anybody help with the following request;

Many thanks for your interesting and informative website about a very special place!
I was wondering if anyone would know any more information about mining in the immediate area ...in particular the disaster at Wheal Charlotte in 1861. I have searched extensively elsewhere on the internet and there is remarkably little information.

Any help gratefully received!
Many thanks
Joe
